Cognitive Load Increases Risk Aversion

چکیده
We investigate how stable individuals’ risk attitudes are with respect to changes in cognitive load. In a laboratory experiment using pairwise lottery choice and a within-subject design, we show that putting subjects under load via a concurrent working-memory task significantly increases their risk aversion. Subjects made significantly faster choices under load. Regardless of load, they responded faster when choosing the less risky option in safe–risky trials, but not in risky–risky trials. We discuss how these findings relate to both dual-system and unitarysystem theories of decisionmaking.Weobserve that predictions of both recent dual-systemand drift–diffusion models of the decision-making process are confirmedby our data and argue for a convergence of these to-date separate strands of the literature.

Effect of Cognitive Biases on Rationality of Economic Decision Making under Risk among Students of Shahid Beheshti University
The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of individual economic decision making under risk and uncertainty. The research method is a quasi-experiment with single group and a post-test. The total population of the students of Shahid Beheshti University in 97 was 8.700 and due to non-normal distribution, we should use non-parametric Wilcoxon test, with sample of 180. The tool used to...
متن کاملRUNNING HEAD: Gaze behaviour in WS and ASD Gaze Aversion as a Cognitive Load Management Strategy in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Williams syndrome
Background. During face-to-face questioning typically developing children and adults use gaze aversion (GA), away from their questioner, when thinking. GA increases with question difficulty and improves the accuracy of responses (e.g. Glenberg et al., 1998; Phelps, Doherty-Sneddon & Warnock, 2006). This is the first study to investigate whether individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; as...
متن کاملCognitive function is associated with risk aversion in community-based older persons
BACKGROUND Emerging data from younger and middle-aged persons suggest that cognitive ability is negatively associated with risk aversion, but this association has not been studied among older persons who are at high risk of experiencing loss of cognitive function. METHODS Using data from 369 community-dwelling older persons without dementia from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, an ongoing l...
متن کاملRisk Aversion Relates to Cognitive Ability: Fact or Fiction?
Recent experimental studies suggest that risk aversion is negatively related to cognitive ability. In this paper we report evidence that this relation might be spurious. We recruit a large subject pool drawn from the general Danish population for our experiment. By presenting subjects with choice tasks that vary the bias induced by random choices, we are able to generate both negative and posit...
متن کاملRisk, Delay, and Convex Self-Control Costs
The dual-self model supposes that decision-making involves a conflict between the desire for immediate and safe gratification on the one hand, and riskier long term benefits on the other. This conflict is resolved through a decision criterion that puts weights on both desires. A key element of the model is that this weighting is endogenous, and that changes in constraints that have the same eff...
